The San Joaquin Valley Guitar Society, Inc is a non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to guitarists and guitar aficionados whose interest is the music of the classical and flamenco guitar.

NICHOLAS GOLUSES, GUITARIST

Mr. Goluses gave persuasive, energetic readings.” The Generalanzeiber (Bonn, Germany), acclaimed: “Goluses reached the highest levels of instrumental virtuosity.”
One of America's most sought-after guitarists, Nicholas Goluses is Professor of Guitar and director of the guitar programs at the Eastman School of Music, widely recognized as one of the world's premier conservatories and a leading center for guitar study. Currently co-chair of the string department at Eastman, Mr. Goluses has held the Andrés Segovia Faculty Chair at the Manhattan School of Music, where he received the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree, and was the recipient of both the Pablo Casals Award “for Musical Accomplishment and Human Endeavor” and the Faculty Award of Distinguished Merit. Mr. Goluses is in great demand for master classes at major colleges, universities and conservatories throughout the world. His students have won top prizes in major guitar competitions (Darwin, Allentown, GFA, D’Addario, MTNA, Appalachian, Rantucci, Rosario, and others) and have won university positions throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Brazil, and Australia.
Nicholas Goluses appears in solo performance, as chamber music player and as soloist with orchestras across North and South America, Europe, Australia and the Far East to critical acclaim. He has been a featured artist at numerous international festivals and he has been praised for his elegant tone and his dazzling virtuosity.
Mr. Goluses has recorded for NAXOS, Albany and BMG, and has received wide critical and audience acclaim for his solo CDs of Sonatas of Johann Sebastian Bach and late solo guitar works of Fernando Sor. He enjoys an active association with flutist Bonita Boyd, and their widely praised debut CD for Albany Records features contemporary American music by Joan Tower, Augusta Read Thomas, Katherine Hoover and Roberto Sierra. He has just completed a new recording for Albany with violist George Taylor of works for viola and guitar.
Committed to performing new music for guitar, Goluses has given world premiere performances of Concertos for guitar and orchestra including those by Samuel Adler, Augusta Read Thomas, Giampaolo Bracali, Blas Galindo, Roberto Sierra, Mark Di Palma, Dinos Constantinides, Elias Tanenbaum and Bill Dobbins. In addition, he has given premieres of over 100 solo and chamber music works by many of today's leading composers.

Julian Byzantine, Guitarist
Julian Byzantine is one of the world's most widely acclaimed classical guitarists. His performances in 76 countries have taken him to many of the most prestigious musical venues in the world from Carnegie Hall to the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall and Sydney Opera House. He is frequently cited in the press for his artistry, individual style and virtuosity, and the New York Times at Carnegie Recital Hall commented, “the current season may not produce another guitar recital as auspicious as Julian Byzantine's…a formidable artist with a style of his own”. He has recorded for EMI/Classics for Pleasure (UK), Meridian Records (UK), and Walsingham Classics (Australia); and for his most recent CD he has been hailed in Classical Guitar (UK) as “one of the most respected names in the guitar world”.
His appearances as guest soloist with major orchestras in Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand have included the Royal Philharmonic and BBC Symphony. In the field of contemporary music he has collaborated with eminent composers such as Pierre Boulez, Peter Maxwell Davies and Peter Sculthorpe. His is author of ‘Guitar Technique Rationalised' - MelBay/Chanterelle, which is regarded as one of the most comprehensive publications on guitar technique. Born in London, Julian Byzantine was the first recipient of an ARCM diploma for guitar from the Royal College of Music, under the tutorship of John Williams. During this period he was awarded scholarships to further his studies with Andrés Segovia, Julian Bream and Alirio Diaz. At the age of twenty-one he was appointed a Professor of Guitar at the Royal Academy of Music (the youngest such appointment in the history of the institution at that time). He is currently head of classical guitar studies at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, Australia.
